Global warming is biting hard on farming communities and this has been harshly felt by smallholder farmers in Nigeria.
YPARD Nigeria held a 2-day training on climate change action in the Ayete, Igangan and Tapa towns of Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State. The project held in partnership with the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) Nigeria aimed to highlight the direct and indirect impact of environmental degradation caused by the massive tree felling activities, burning of fossil fuel, and poor waste management among others ongoing in Ibarapa North Local Government, Oyo State Nigeria.
Community leaders were highlighted as gospel carriers who would take the lesson learnt at the event to their local places of influence. 117 key stakeholders, farmers, community leaders, women leaders, youth leaders and the state environmental enforcement agencies were present at the training which was held at the town hall.
Chidinma Ezeh, the Membership and Program Officer of YPARD Nigeria who spoke at the event highlighted global warming and the evidenced change in the rainfall patterns of the farming community. Observing the situation at hand, she explained that ‘the earth we received is not the earth we are passing unto later generations.’
Isaiah Adekunmbi, the Communication Champion of YPARD Nigeria taught about appropriate waste disposal. He highlighted the benefits of sorting waste and the possibilities of recycling.
Akin Showemimo, the YPARD Nigeria Country Representative introduced alternative cooking devices to the participants, highlighting the innovation of biogas, briquettes as fuel and modern cooking stoves. There was a practical session as the cooking devices were presented to the communities.
The training was engaging and participatory and the participants were assessed for learning outcomes after the event. Mrs Kehinde Stephens who was a participant in the workshop expressed gratitude for the workshop stating that this was the first time she was hearing of Biogas as a sustainable alternative for cooking fuel.
YPARD Nigeria further identified knowledge and skill gaps and hopes to be able to address these gaps in subsequent events.
