Background
The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) is the international body representing trade union confederations in more than 155 countries. As part of its expanding mandate, the ITUC is working on environmental issues, notably by raising awareness among workers, governments, UN agencies and other civil society groups on the need to integrate the ‘social element’ into environmental policies.
With regards to its environmental agenda, ITUC has developed a close collaboration with Sustainlabour, a trade union foundation whose main aim is to promote union action on the environment through training and research (www.sustainlabour.org).
Over the last couple of years, both institutions have been working on ‘green jobs’, the opportunities for employment that could be created through the promotion of more sustainable economic and social policies. As part of a joint research program undertaken with UNEP and the ILO, a first report on ‘green jobs’ was released last year[1].
Objectives and format of the paper
Following the Green Jobs report release and the subsequent feedback received, further analysis of an important issue is needed: the significance of green jobs for women workers in developed and developing contexts.
ITUC and Sustainlabour are prepared to fund an exploratory research paper in which the issue of ‘green jobs’ is analyzed from a gender perspective, integrating “green & decent jobs” opportunities and challenges for women workers in the North and South, examples of gender-sensitive green jobs and some policy recommendations for strengthening the gender dimension in broader trade union policies
The expected outcomes of this research will be presented through the following formats: a research paper and a policy brief identifying key policy messages.
The research outcomes will be presented during the ITUC Women’s Conference (October 2009) and in the upcoming COP15 in Copenhagen in December (during which trade unions will hold a ‘World of Work Pavilion’).
Abstracts must be submitted electronically by 21st June 2009 and must not exceed 450 words. Please attach a CV (including relevant research projects and publications). The report can also be written in Spanish or French. This, however, implies a reduction in the deadline for the final submission (for translation purposes)
