Writeshop Climate Change and Disaster Reduction

Though climate change is expected to take a particularly big toll on developing nations, and many are actively engaged in adaptation efforts, very few articles in peer-reviewed journals are written by developing-country researchers. Aware of this, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and ENDA Tiers Monde invite applications from young scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and others from Africa who are working in the field of climate change and disaster risk reduction to participate in a Writeshop from 7-11 May 2012 in Dakar, Senegal. The Writeshop will be hosted by ENDA Tiers Monde.

Deadlines for submittance: March 20, 2012.

The Writeshop will be hosted by ENDA Tiers Monde.

Through the Writeshop, participants will produce a peer-review, publishable quality article and they will gain enhanced awareness of the process of writing papers for academic journals. These skills will allow their work to be eligible for incorporation into publications of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other high-level scientific bodies and consequently inform policy making on key issues of risk and climate.

The Writeshop will last 5 days. The first day includes plenary sessions and the second day, small group discussions and independent work. Participants will be then required to briefly present their articles. The third day includes an optional field trip. During the fourth and fifth day, the new version of the documents will be written in collaboration with the facilitators.

The Writeshop will involve one-on-one work with facilitators to provide guidance and supplemental training on academic writing skills and argumentation, in order to help new authors reach a standard of writing suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals. A maximum of sixteen participants will be selected. The Writeshop will be held in French.
