The Alfred Wegner Institute hosts the Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence. The program provides training and career development in observational oceanography, using facilities at Helgoland and Sylt in the North Sea. The next training program, beginning in late 2021, is open to participants from developing and emerging countries. Trainees must have at least a first degree in science. Preference will be given to applicants who currently hold a position in a research or academic institution in a developing country, and who anticipate returning to the country after completion of the training.
