The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is seeking an
experienced agricultural economist to contribute to
the development of wheat and maize systems in South Asia. The micro-economist will work
as member of a multi-disciplinary team that
includes other social scientists, biophysical scientists and GIS specialists. The position will be
posted to CIMMYT´s New Delhi office
and will be expected to work throughout the northern South Asia region (particularly India,
Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh). The initial
appointment will be for a period of three years.
The primary responsibilities will include:
Conduct surveys to assess the technology needs of poor rural households.
Assess the likely profitability of improved agricultural production technologies currently
under development.
Conduct field surveys to document the adoption and diffusion of improved agricultural
production technologies, impact on the welfare
of poor rural households, particularly vulnerable groups within the community, and identify
constraints to adoption and diffusion.
Analyze household data studies to assess policy interventions that will encourage
sustainable intensification of wheat and maizebased
farming systems.
Participate in activities designed to accelerate more widespread adoption of improved
agricultural production technologies.
Contribute to CIMMYT´s training and institutional capacity strengthening efforts.
Manage and implement a portfolio of research projects and contribute to CIMMYT´s
resource mobilization efforts to ensure continuity
of the above and associated research agenda.
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications
Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics or a closely related field with at least 5 years post-
doctoral experience
Strong quantitative analysis skills
Knowledge of crop and natural resource management issues
Experience designing and implementing socioeconomic household field surveys, and
familiarity with rapid field survey techniques
Ability to travel extensively in rural areas
Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
The ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary, multicultural team
Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
