Doctoral Student Position for Agricultural Economist

The Chair of International Food Economics and Rural Development (Prof. Qaim) of
the Georg-August-University of Göttingen (Germany) is searching for a doctoral
student to carry out research on linkages between rural social services and
agricultural growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The position is funded for a period of
three years and is open from January 2010 (exact starting date negotiable). The
salary grade level is TVL E13 (50%).

The research project will be carried out jointly with the International Food Policy
Research Institute (IFPRI) and local partners in Tanzania, Mozambique, and
Burkina Faso. Building both on primary and secondary data, econometric models
will be developed and used to analyze the impact of public expenditures in
education, health, and other social services on agricultural productivity and income.
The position will be based in Göttingen, but requires travel to the study countries for
data collection and exchange with collaborators.

The successful candidate has an outstanding Master´s degree (or equivalent) in
agricultural economics, general economics, or a related discipline, strong analytical
skills, experience with econometric and statistical methods, proven interest in topics
related to development policy, strong computer skills, and excellent command of the
English language. German language skills would be a plus.
