Applicants are invited to postulate until the 15th of January 2010 for a post-doctoral or PhD
position at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe
(IAMO) in the EU-funded project PRIMA (PRototypical policy Impacts on Multifunctional
Activities in rural municipalities).
The position starts in February 1st or later, with a contract duration of initially 12 months (for
post-doctoral position) or 2 years (for PhD student), with the possibility to be extended.
The position involves working with agent-based and micro-simulation models to identify the
main trends in social and ecological dynamics, in particular in land use, structural change,
ecosystem services, and tourism and to identify how policies affects these trends. Case study
regions are spread overall in Europe (Germany, France, Czech Republic, UK, Bulgaria and
Croatia) and the applicant may be requested to travel to one or more of these zones in the
framework of the project. The modeling will complement and extend on-field results obtained
by interactions with local stakeholders and economic actors (participatory modeling), as well
as by extensive literature studies. Therefore knowledge on EU policies (EAFRD, ESF and
EFRD) is highly appreciated. The research will be done together within an international group
of researchers working in the field of agricultural economics, cognitive sciences and
environmental sciences.
Main tasks:
oAssist in model and simulation development.
oInteraction with regional stakeholders (in Germany) for participatory modeling and
simulation.
oAdaptation of the developed models to selected regions of EU.
Post-doctoral position requirements:
oPhD in a quantitative social science, agricultural economics, environmental sciences,
behavioral sciences.
oExperience in working within an international research environment.
oHighly effective writing and oral communication skills in English and German
(compulsory).
oKnowledge of agent-based or micro-simulation models and/or
oexperience in participatory modeling approaches.
PhD Student position requirements:
oDegree equivalent to a Diploma or MSc preferably in agricultural economics.
oInterest to in work within an international research environment.
oHighly effective writing and oral communication skills in English and German
(compulsory).
oInterest in agent-based or micro-simulation models and/or
oparticipatory modeling approaches.
The position is located in Halle (Saale), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at the Leibniz Institute of
Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) which is one of the leading
public research institutions on transition economies (website: www.iamo.de). Halle is a city
with a long history and cultural inheritage as well as a dynamic and vibrant research and
student environment. The city is very well connected to major railway lines (Berlin, Leipzig)
and to the airport Leipzig/Halle. The salary is based on the TV-L with social benefits valid for
public servants (Post-doctoral position 1.0 TV-L E13 or PhD Student position 0.5 TV-L E13).
