Job description:
The project relates to the management of biodiversity for the provision of soil ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes. Farmers are increasingly concerned about soil compaction and water stagnation on their fields, a problem that is expected to aggravate due to climate change. The beneficial effects of earthworms on soil structure are well-known. The project aims to assess if soil structure and water infiltration and retention in arable soils can be improved through a higher earthworm diversity and density resulting from non-inversion tillage, controlled traffic and field margin management. Earthworm populations and physical soil properties will be measured in a replicated field experiment and in existing situations on-farm. The research will include mesocosm experiments with different earthworm species. Upscaling of the results will be done in collaboration with the WU-Centre for Geo-information using remote sensing, GIS and ecohydrological modeling. Alterra-Soil Physics & Land Use and Plant Research International are also collaborating.
Requirements:
MSc degree in soil science, environmental sciences, agrotechnology or a related field. Good communication and collaborative skills (also in English) and experience with soil analysis are required.
Conditions of employment:
A full-time position for 4 years with a go-no-go decision after 12 months. The monthly salary starts at € 2042 in the first year, increasing to € 2612 in the fourth year.
