PhD fellowship at ZEF on spatial assessment of land suitability for Clean Development
Mechanism afforestation in Central Asia
ZEF is looking for a candidate for a PhD study as a part of the interdisciplinary research
project "Opportunities for climate change mitigation through afforestation of degraded
croplands in Central Asia", which was initiated by ZEF in 2009 with a financial support from
the Robert Bosch Stiftung.
The GIS/RS component of the project will aim to elaborate a GIS/RS-based tool for
identification and suitability assessment of marginal and abandoned croplands for carbon
sequestration and non-timber production. The PhD candidate is expected to pursue the
doctoral study in a close collaboration with colleagues from the accompanying research
packages, particularly on modeling the tree growth and C sequestration following
afforestation of degraded cropland, and on the economics of small-scale forests in the
context of the Clean Development Mechanism. The fellowship will provide a stipend and
research funds to pursue this doctoral study.
Requirements for the PhD candidates:
Relevant Master´s degree (geography); experience in GIS modeling and RS; good writing
skills in English; team work-orientation. Previous experience in Central Asian region and
knowledge of Uzbek (or Russian) and German language are desirable.
