The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Livestock Specialist to contribute to Livestock and Irrigation Value Chains for Ethiopian Smallholders (LIVES) and CGIAR Research Program on livestock and fish. The purpose and responsibility of this position is to lead and coordinate all livestock research and development interventions in the LIVES project. The incumbent will report to the project manager.
Responsibilities
- Lead and facilitate interactions among the researchers across the four Regions to make their work more effective, fostering collaboration and synergies where possible. Work closely with senior staff to ensure that research and development priorities from the value chain perspective are appropriately reflected and integrated at value chain level;
- Identify and agree with the relevant project and partner staff across the four Regions their roles in implementing the work plan each year, including specific deliverables and their timing and prepare a consolidated annual program of work and budget to support the agreed activities;
- Develop and manage strategic partnerships and research collaborations that improve the ability of the team to achieve the agreed outputs and outcomes and coordinate linkages for livestock research with ILRIs CRP 3.7;
- Be responsible for developing a livestock research and development plan based on livestock value chain problems and opportunities , in consultation with project staff and partners;
- Monitor progress in implementing the activities and delivering outputs, and prepare an annual progress report using an agreed upon format;
- Be responsible for synthesizing and publishing livestock research and development results;
- Build capacity and knowledge of service providers in approaches and livestock value chain interventions through formal training courses and on the job trainings;
- Organize national livestock value chain learning events with national and international partners
- Contribute scientific and technical inputs to specific components of the value chain research according to competency and experience;
- Supervise graduate students at MSc/PhD levels.
Requirements
- The successful candidate should be a livestock expert with a broad range of technical and managerial skills and experience, preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa and Ethiopia;
- A PhD degree in livestock and 5 -7 years post doctoral experience, especially as it relates to the design, implementation and communication of applied livestock research.
- Proven record in leading and documenting diagnostic, action or impact research in livestock
- Understanding of the rural and small enterprise innovation processes; Understanding of value chain concepts
- Proven record in technical assistance and capacity development
- Proven skills in team building and developing partnerships with national and international R&D actors and private sector;
- Proven ability to work in and facilitate a multi-institutional environment;
- Good analytical and writing skills and good command of English
- Work experience in Ethiopia and an understanding of the CGIAR is desirable
Post location: The position is based at ILRIs Headquarters Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Extensive travel to other countries and regions will be required.
Position level: The position is Scientist/Research Level 2 dependent on qualifications and experience.
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
