The Swedish university of agricultural sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, UmeƄ and Uppsala.

Department of aquatic sciences and assessment

The department of aquatic sciences and assessment is a competence center for applied environmental science and has a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The department is part of SLU’s Soil-Water-Environment Center and has about 100 employees. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, as well as on aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. The department is located at SLU’s campus in Uppsala, Sweden. Uppsala is a town of 140 000 inhabitants, 40 km north of Stockholm Arlanda International airport.

The department of aquatic aciences and assessment is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for the Formas Research Council funded project "Effects of large-scale climate-induced oligotrofication on the food webs of the arctic/alpine lakes".

Duties:

The postdoc will study how food webs in arctic/alpine lakes have been affected by large-scale environmental changes that has led to a dramatic reduction in lake total phosphorus concentrations. The project spans over large spatial and temporal scales and includes studies of archived material (in biobanks and lake sediments) and field studies in lakes with different concentrations of nutrients. The organisms studied are key components of aquatic food webs, i.e. benthic algae, microcrustaceans, midges, and fish. The position is placed at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment at SLU in Uppsala, and it includes cooperation with a recently recruited graduate student, as well as with senior researchers at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Qualifications:

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most. Applicants should hold a PhD degree in aquatic ecology, limnology, or equivalent, and have proven scientific skills. Good knowledge of aquatic food webs and proficiency in English (spoken and written) are required. Experience of ecological in Arctic/alpine areas and of using mixing models for analysis of stabile isotopes is a merit. The applicant should have a valid driver’s license for car.
