Over 600 people attended the 4th Agriculture and Rural Development Day (ARDD) on 18th June, with another 600 watching the live webcast and thousands more interacting via social media at Rio+20. Learning events explored concrete cases of success that could translate into a thorough transformation of the global food system, and afternoon sessions focused on science for a food-secure future.

In a Final Communiqué the event organisers highlighted that "The new vision for sustainable development that will emerge from the Rio+20 Earth Summit must recognize the significance of agriculture in economic growth, food security, poverty reduction and long-term environmental sustainability." Read full text.

With the Rio+20 conference now over, the final outcome document on 'The Future We Want' recognises farmers in several key places. "Small-scale farmers, fisherfolk, pastoralists and foresters, can make important contributions to sustainable development through production activities that are environmentally sound, enhance food security and the livelihood of the poor, and invigorate production and sustained economic growth." Read a summary of the Rio+20 outcomes for food and farming.
