Jefferson Magalhaes , Co-Founder of Ostera Technology for Precision Agriculture

I was born in 1979 in the city of Carazinho, located in an agricultural region in the southern of Brazil. Although my parents did not have any direct link with agriculture, grain farms have always been part of my daily life during childhood and youth, as well as agricultural events that aroused in me a great interest in machinery and equipment related to agriculture.

My mother wanted me to study Agronomy, but in 1997 I decided to make a technical course in Electronics in a federal technical school in a neighboring state, and this headed my family to move to this new city. After graduation as electronics technician, I was intern in a small company that used to develop and sell electronic equipments. I was hired and stayed there for few years; this gave me experience and began to awaken in me an entrepreneurial spirit.

To gain more experience, I worked in two other companies in the same industry and, in 2005, I felt it was time to face a degree in electronics. I was looking for a course that was completely focused on product development with a dash of entrepreneurship, so that I could have the knowledge to develop products to reach the market of Precision Agriculture, which was at its very beginning in Brazil but had everything to grow much more in the next decades.

In 2009, along with two colleagues, we founded the company Ostera Technology in order to research, develop and commercialize innovative technologies to achieve the market of Precision Agriculture. Our focus is to create products that help farmers to produce more and better, the more sustainable as possible. Currently, we manufacture Agricultural GPS, Variable Rate Controllers (seeds and fertilizers) and we will soon be launching Autopilot, Crop Productivity Monitor and softwares that promote cost reduction in the field and help to increase productivity throughout the whole agriculture cycle, from soil preparation to harvesting. Our goal is to help farmers achieve excellent results, while benefiting the environment and food consumers.

Besides our technologies make farming much more versatile and attractive to young people, by increasing productivity and incomes while encouraging sustainability and food security, and because our electronics are embedded in agricultural machines and implements.It particularly interests farmers’ children, who are already familiar with information technology, mostly because it is part of their daily lives. We believe that these new technologies help to prevent migration of young people from the countryside to the city and also make the agricultural activity modern, productive and profitable.

My message to young professionals who are directly involved in agricultural development is: be qualified, be constantly learning, do networking and exchange experiences with others, - Not only in the agricultural sector but beyond, because it expands our perspectives and opens up many career opportunities and businesses. Most importantly, work hard, leave your comfort zone if necessary; this way you will find success in your projects and initiatives. Remember: you cannot change your past, but you can change your future! It just depends on you!

Nasci em 1979 na cidade de Carazinho, situada em uma região agrícola no interior do Sul do Brasil. Apesar de meus pais não terem nenhum vínculo direto com a agricultura, as fazendas de grãos sempre fizeram parte do meu cotidiano durante a infância e adolescência, assim como os eventos agrícolas que despertaram em mim, já naquela época, um grande interesse por máquinas e equipamentos relacionados à agricultura.

Minha mãe queria que estudasse Agronomia, mas acabei optando, em 1997, por fazer um curso Técnico em Eletrônica em uma escola técnica federal em um estado vizinho, o que gerou a mudança da minha família para esta nova cidade. Após ter me formado técnico em eletrônica, fui estagiar em uma pequena empresa que desenvolvia e comercializava equipamentos eletrônicos. Lá fui contratado e permaneci alguns anos, o que me deu experiência e começou a despertar em mim um espírito empreendedor. Para ganhar mais experiência, fui trabalhar em mais duas empresas no mesmo segmento e, em 2005, senti que era o momento de encarar um curso superior de eletrônica. Eu buscava um curso que fosse totalmente focado em desenvolvimento de produtos com uma pitada de empreendedorismo para que eu pudesse ter o conhecimento necessário para desenvolver produtos para o mercado de Agricultura de Precisão, que estava iniciando no Brasil mas tinha tudo para crescer muito mais nas próximas décadas.

Em 2009, juntamente com mais dois colegas fundamos a empresa Ostera Tecnologia para pesquisar, desenvolver e comercializar tecnologias inovadoras para o mercado de Agricultura de Precisão. Nosso foco é criar produtos que ajudem o agricultor a produzir mais e melhor, da maneira mais sustentável possível. Atualmente, fabricamos GPS Agrícola, Controladores de Taxa Variável (sementes, corretivos e fertilizantes) e, em breve, estaremos lançando Piloto Automático, Monitor de Produtividade de Colheita e softwares que promovem a redução de custos na lavoura e o aumento da produtividade em todo o ciclo agrícola, do preparo do solo à colheita. Nosso objetivo é ajudar a gerar excelentes resultados aos agricultores, beneficiando também o meio ambiente e os consumidores dos alimentos.

Além de todos os benefícios no aumento de produtividade e renda, incentivo à sustentabilidade e segurança dos alimentos, pelo fato de nossos equipamentos eletrônicos serem embarcados nas máquinas e implementos agrícolas, isso torna a atividade agrícola muito mais versátil e atrativa aos jovens, principalmente aos filhos dos agricultores que, na sua maioria, já estão familiarizados com a tecnologia da informação, pois ela faz parte de seu cotidiano. Acreditamos que essas novas tecnologias ajudam a evitar a migração dos jovens do campo para a cidade, pois a tecnologia torna a atividade agrícola moderna, produtiva e rentável.

Minha mensagem para os jovens profissionais que estão diretamente envolvidos com o desenvolvimento agrícola (PAD) é que se qualifiquem, estejam constantemente aprendendo, façam networking e troquem experiências com outras pessoas não só do segmento agrícola, pois isso expande nossos horizontes e abre muitas oportunidades profissionais e de negócios. E o mais importante, trabalhe duro, saindo de sua zona de conforto se necessário, pois assim se destacarão e serão bem-sucedidos em seus projetos e iniciativas. Lembrem-se, você não pode mudar seu passado, mas pode mudar seu futuro! Só depende de você!
