International DAAD-Alumni Summer School 2009 "Postharvest technologies - High Tec for
food security and food safety"
In 2009 the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides financial support to
organize three International Alumni Summer Schools at German universities. The DAAD-
Alumni Summer School "Postharvest technologies - High Tec for food security and food
safety" will take place in Göttingen from 14 th to 20 st March, 2009. The visit of the Anuga
FoodTec in Cologne, the world`s most important trade fair for food and beverage technology,
is part of the program. At first, the participants will visit the Anuga FoodTec during 10th to
13th March (date of arrival: 8th March). Afterwards, the summer school will start in
Goettingen at 14th March until 20th March (date of departure: 21th March). Excursions to
food processing companies, practical experiments and demonstrations in the laboratory, and
also presentations of the alumni and alumnae will be part of the summer school program.
Main Objective
The main objective of the summer school in Goettingen is the discussion of challenges for
postharvest treatment under different regional conditions. The visit of the Anuga FoodTec,
the papers presented by the alumni, excursions, as well as laboratory experiments and
practices will give all participants the opportunity to demonstrate and discuss effective and
modern postharvest methods from the perspective of science and practical experience.

o Postharvest technologies in developed and developing countries
o Modern and effective postharvest technologies and use of alternative energy supply
(solar, biogas)
o Ensuring food quality with High Tec postharvest technologies
Program
After visiting the Anuga FoodTec from 10th to 13th March, the program in Goettingen will
include:
o Papers and case studies presented by the alumni and invited extern experts
o Experimental and practical demonstrations of drying techniques and quality analysis
o Group discussions
o Excursions

Cost Coverage
The following costs will be covered by the organizers:
o 75 % of the cost for an economy-class return ticket
o transport from Frankfurt Airport to Cologne/Bonn
o transport from Cologne to Goettingen
o transport from Goettingen to Frankfurt Airport
o hotel costs, catering, health insurance and visa costs
We ask also all participants to cover the transport costs from your home town to your home
airport.
Participants
The participants of the International Summer School should be
o Alumni of German universities from a developing country
o Working in the field of postharvest technology, food technology, food safety and
security, agricultural economy
o "Multipliers", e.g. people who are in a position to spread the acquired knowledge and
experience and/or
o Decision makers, able to take decisions in the agricultural and food sector
Contributions from the alumni are expected. Hence, alumni are requested to send the title
and abstract. The main topics are given above. The size of the abstract should not exceed
one page and should be written with font type "Arial, font size 12.

The summer school will be held in English, sufficient knowledge is required to participate in
the summer school, enabling you to follow the presentations and discussion rounds.
