I am planning to venture into peas farming this coming season. I have already leased 1.5 acres in Njoro, Nakuru County on your way to Mau Narok.
I haven’t done peas before so I am relying on the farmers on the ground to advise me but I need your advice on the best variety, pest and disease management.
Farmer
The variety that you choose will depend on the target market, whether local or export. For export, the exporters normally provide the seeds.
Some common varieties are Black-eyed Susan, Green Feast, Earlicrop, Onward and Alderman.
The main disease is powdery mildew, which is managed by early planting and spraying with suitable fungicide.
Major pests include aphids, African bollworms, weevils and nematodes. These pests are controlled by use of suitable insecticides, crop rotation and soil treatments for the nematodes.
