YPARD at The World Food Prize – focusing on “the Next Generation”!

YPARD will be attending The World Food Prize in conjunction with the “Borlaug Dialogue international symposium on “The Next Generation” and the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute, from October 12 to 15, 2011, Des Moines, Iowa.

 

The World Food Prize is an international award given to those whose work has significantly improved food quality, quantity or availability. The World Food Prize organization is a prominent international leader in promoting research and collaboration to eliminate hunger and advance human development.

H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have been chosen to receive the 2011 World Food Prize for their personal commitment and visionary leadership while serving as the presidents of Ghana and of Brazil respectively, in creating and implementing government policies to alleviate hunger and poverty in their countries.

“Borlaug Dialogue” international symposium, October 12-14, is proposed in conjunction with the 2011 World Food Prize. For celebrating its 25^th anniversary year, the Borlaug Dialogue will focus on “The Next Generation: Confronting the Hunger Challenges of Tomorrow”. High-level policymakers, NGO leaders and development experts, CEOs and private sector officials and eminent scientific experts from around the globe will participate in “conversations” that will also include the perspectives of a diverse array of international entrepreneurs, innovators and young leaders.

The "Next Generation" theme will ask several critical questions:

• What are the most pressing future challenges that the global community will face in fighting hunger and poverty?
• Who will be the next generation of leaders to confront such challenges and how do we best prepare and develop these leaders?
• What are the next generation of technologies, methodologies, models and solutions to overcome such challenges?

YPARD will then be attending the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute, October 13-15. The Global Youth Institute is a three-day conference intended to help high school students learn about and comprehend the problems of world hunger. Students selected for the institute must conduct research and write a paper. During their time at the institute, students meet with World Food and Nobel Prize laureates and other international experts to discuss food security and related agricultural issues. The World Food Prize Global Youth Institute on Saturday is the culminating day of the annual 3-day youth conference! On this day student delegates present essays they have written on global food security and discuss their findings with international experts and their peers. 

 

What will YPARD be doing there?

• From the discussion and the identification of the challenges that the global community will face in fighting hunger and poverty, the solutions to address them and the need of the next generation of leaders to confront them, YPARD will tailor its actions towards Young Professionals accomplishment in and for Agricultural Research for Development.

• It is also a great opportunity for YPARD to gain visibility from different stakeholders in ARD : policymakers, NGO leaders and development experts, private sector officials, scientific experts, worldwide!

• People and organizations who will be attending this event, all promote entrepreneurship, innovation and youth role; it shall therefore gather great future partners and supporters for YPARD!

• We also want to sensitize the students and associations of students present, to YPARD movement, and therefore get more Youth from North America in order to expand the international dialogue implemented among the YPARD members from different regions of the world and gain from our diverse experiences.

• YPARD, as a unique movement of Young Professionals for Young Professionals in Agricultural Research for Development has to gain in visibility, broaden and strengthen its movement!
